Worklife balance, TV nerves and making space

When one door closes another opens.  This year I’d decided not to write a book.  I’ve generally done one a year and I love it.  There’s eight of them out there at the moment though, and this is a year of consolidation for me.  Taking stock of where I am and making space for what may emerge from here.  Especially now having 10 years in business under my belt.

It’s exciting to sit in this space of possibility.  It’s also very challenging sitting in the space of not knowing!  As humans we tend to want a plan, some certainty and to feel like we’re in control.  We also like to do what we know!

What’s funny though is once we get past the uncomfortable feeling of sitting in the space and leaning into the unknown to see what emerges – things emerge.

I was delighted to be asked to work with 1News as their in house work-life balance expert.  This has resulted in a regular column and some Breakfast TV segments.  In the space of not writing books, I’ve also been asked to write for Stuff so it looks like that creative writing itch will get plenty of opportunity to be scratched this year, even in the absence of a book.

It’s been interesting saying yes, taking these opportunities and seeing where they lead. Despite the imposter syndrome, the doubts that come up as soon as people start calling you an expert and that uncomfortable feeling we get in our humble and modest culture when people start recognising you from breakfast TV. All part of the experience, all an opportunity for me to practice what I teach others and to continue my own growth and development, even when it feels like I might be pushing the limits of what I imagined possible back in my days of burnout when I left the corporate world.

The one thing that continues to be my guide is finding space - to think, to be and to create. To allow what’s unfolding the space to become and to sit in that space not having to know all the answers or have it all figured out. If you’d have asked me this year what I’d planned this would not have featured and yet I’m stoked it does.

Making space for what comes can open us up for opportunities outside of our plans or even our imagination.  What do you need to stop doing in order to create space for something else to emerge?
